Trump and China present different versions of tariff negotiations

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that White House representatives have kept conversations with China to resolve the trade war, but did not want to give details about who the Chinese were: “They had a meeting this morning, so I can’t tell you. No matter who we may reveal later, but they had meetings this morning and we have met with China.”

The statement was in response to a press questioning after Beijing deny that there are ongoing negotiations. The journalists accompanied the meeting between the Republican and Norway Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

In addition to the president, a White House officer said that this week there were less -level in -person conversations and a call between employees of the United States and China governments.

On the other side of the world, the information continues in the opposite direction. Beijing’s government states that any mention of alleged commercial dealings is a liar.

“All this is false news. As far as I know, China and the United States have not made consultations or negotiations on the tariff issue,” said China Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun.

Conflicting statements highlight the uncertainties of the current trade war, with negative impacts felt on both sides. American companies face high import costs, while China exporters are pressured by the fall in US demand. The US President and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated this week that there may be a reduction in tensions with China.

According to the Reuters news agency, Chinese experts advising the government see Trump’s rhetoric as a way to give in to US internal pressure – amid the drop in their approval in the polls – and an attempt to master markets. Aides believe that Beijing is in advantage and is not in a hurry to close an agreement with the White House.
