US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States “controlling and possessing” the Gaza Strip would be a good thing, once again presenting a proposal that he made several times during the first weeks of his government.
“Having a peace force like the United States there, controlling and having the Gaza Strip would be a good thing,” Trump said in comments at the White House next to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump once again suggested the displacement of the population of Gaza and said that “many countries” would accept the 2.1 million Palestinians who would leave the territory. Regional allies rejected such a forced displacement, which could be equivalent to a war crime.
According to the United Nations, the Israeli War against Hamas has moved 90% of Gaza residents, many of whom were forced to move repeatedly.
“If you take people, the Palestinians, and move them to different countries-and you have many countries that will do it-and you really will have a freedom zone. You call it a freedom zone, a free zone, an area where people will not be killed every day,” Trump said on Monday (7).
“It’s an infernal place,” Trump continued. “You know how I call him – a great place no one wants to live.”
The US President also questioned “why Israel gave up (from Gaza).”
“They took properties by the sea and gave them people for peace. How did it work?” Said Trump, who proposed to turn the enclave into a “riviera” that would be owned by the United States.
Israel captured Gaza in the six -day war of 1967 and occupied it for almost 40 years.
