Tragedy in RS: with more rain forecast, governor appeals to the population not to return to risk areas

With the forecast of more rain over Rio Grande do Sul in the coming days, governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) warned that the population in risk areas in the state should not return to the evacuated regions.

“There is a prospect of rain raising river levels again. That is why we appeal to people not to return to risky places”, said the governor during a press conference this Friday (10).

According to the weather forecast presented by meteorologists from the Rio Grande do Sul government, the state is expected to receive more rain until next Monday (13). The days with the possibility of more severe storms are Sunday (12) and Monday.

The areas that are expected to be most affected by the rain are the central, north and northeast regions of the state, in addition to the valleys, the north coast and the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre.

Starting tomorrow, the large rivers that cross the state, such as Taquari, Caí, Sinos and Jacuí, should return to flood levels. In Guaíba, which borders the Greater Porto Alegre region, the most significant responses should be noticed from Sunday onwards. The level of Guaíba may once again exceed 5 meters.

The governor warned that, in addition to flooding, there is a risk of landslides in areas where the ground is already wet. For this reason, there will be preventive closures on the ERS-332 highways, in the Arroio do Meio region; ERS 129, in Vale do Taquari; and Rota do Sol, in Caxias do Sul.

“Regarding the rains over the next few days, the most likely consequence is a repeat of what we saw happen in the last few days and weeks. In other words, rivers that have already been affected, such as Taquari and Jacuí, later with the contribution here to Guaíba and the metropolitan region. There is also the risk of landslides in places where the ground is wet”, warned Leite.

“Therefore, the recommendation is to remain alert and avoid returning to your communities this weekend”, concluded the governor.
