Tongaat residents are coming to grips with the scale of the destruction.
Edwina Vrijmohun, a local teacher, lamented the extensive damage caused to the house. She described the event as a second catastrophe, having just recovered from last year's floods.
“I'm newly married, I just did renovations after the floods, and this is another disaster for us,” she told Reuters.
Local media reported that the national weather service had issued a level four warning for heavy rain and possible flooding.
