Top managers of Binance in Russia leave the company

Two top managers leave the Binance cryptocurrency exchange at once amid the company’s litigation with financial regulators in the US and Europe. Binance Eastern Europe Director Gleb Kostarev and CIS Director Vladimir Smerkis announced their departure.

“Friends, today is my last day at Binance. I am leaving the position of VP responsible for Eastern Europe, the CIS, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand (a few months ago I also stopped working on the Asia-Pacific region),” Kostarev wrote on Facebook.

Kostarev thanked Binance founder Changpeng Zhao and the entire team:

“The last five years have been incredibly interesting, and I am happy if I could contribute to the spread of cryptocurrencies and the freedom of money.”

With a difference of several tens of minutes, Smerkis announced his departure:

“If I drew my career wish cards, then the black-and-yellow brand would definitely be in it. And he was. And how. I don’t regret a single day with the company.”

The top manager added that he was ready to tell the media all the details:

“I know that you and the media will have a lot of questions about the reasons … I will definitely share everything. We will broadcast, or maybe a meeting in Moscow to talk.”

Mayur Kamat, head of products and design at Binance, has previously resigned. Other recent layoffs include Binance Asia Pacific Director Leon Foong, Chief Strategy Officer Patrick Hillman, General Counsel Hon Ng, and Chief Business Officer Yibo Ling. The other day, representatives of the exchange allowed the complete withdrawal of Binance from the Russian market.

Binance’s market share has declined in recent months due to issues with US authorities. In February, the share of the cryptocurrency exchange in spot trading volumes was 63%, and now it has fallen to about 47%. However, Binance remains the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world.
