“Today we have more space and opportunities”, says drag queen Silvetyy Montilla

In an interview with CNN Radio on CNN no Plural, Silvetty Montilla, who is one of the pioneer drag queens here in Brazil, said that “today, thank God, we have more space.”

“In June, I celebrated 35 years at night, at the time I started it was much more difficult. I would not have the opportunity to give an interview, today we are in cinema, television, theater, events and parties, the opportunities have grown a lot”, he added.

At the same time, however, Silvetty assesses that “there is still a long way to go” for Brazil to improve the conditions of inclusion for drag queens, although there has been progress.

“I think the prejudice continues, but it is made up, with this visibility it has made a lot of difference, people are understanding that he is a great artist there.”

The drag queen highlights the work of singer Pabllo Vittar as very important for this process of increasing visibility.

“We mention Pabllo because I believe he changed a whole story, gave people the opportunity to show up more. She represents us and her success belongs to all of us.”

Silvetty Montilla reinforced that the new generation that seeks a career as a drag queen “has to pursue it”: “It is not easy, but if you have talent it is possible.”

According to her, being a drag queen is an artistic expression, whether male or female, in singing, dancing, catwalks and so many other forms of art.
