The trial and hearing of Érika de Souza Vieira, 42 years old, niece of “Uncle Paulo”, was scheduled by the Rio de Janeiro Court to begin on September 19th. Furthermore, the document maintains the decision that “revoked the preventive detention of the accused.”
The incident took place on April 16, when Érika was detained by the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police after taking her uncle, identified as Paulo Roberto Braga, 68 years old, who was dead, to withdraw R$17 thousand related to a bank loan.
At the time, videos of the moment went viral on social media. Paulo’s niece appeared in the images carrying him in a wheelchair, trying to get him to sign a document to complete the withdrawal.
A CNN the delegate from the 34th DP, Fábio Luiz da Silva Souza, responsible for the case, said at the time that Érika had tried to take out other loans under her uncle’s name, in addition to trying to buy a cell phone.
“She visited two financial institutions to try to get a loan. In one case, the attendant would not have carried out the loan because she saw Mr. Paulo’s condition. She [Érika] I would also have tried to buy a cell phone. We are still going to investigate this to check with the store and see what his situation was at that time”, said the delegate.
The elderly man’s niece became a defendant for attempted fraud and vilification of a corpse. She had been denounced for these crimes by the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro. Érika left the Djanira Dolores de Oliveira Penal Institute, in Bangu, Rio de Janeiro, on the afternoon of May 2nd.
