Tiago Abravanel talks about how he deals with the death of his grandfather Silvio Santos: “Doing what I love”

The actor and singer Tiago Abravanel 36, revealed how he has been dealing with the death of his grandfather, the presenter Silvio Santos . The revelation took place at a press conference for the musical. “Hairspray” in which the actor is responsible for directing and acting in the show.

When asked about the death of the businessman, who passed away at the age of 93 on August 17, Abravanel says that he always liked to do “a thousand things at the same time” and comments that “doing what he loves” helps him get through difficult times like this.

“It’s like the loss of my grandfather, which wasn’t just difficult for me. I think it’s difficult for the whole of Brazil to deal with. So, what has helped me the most and continues to help me is precisely continuing to do what I love,” he says.

He then explains what Silvio Santos would do if he were in his situation: “If he were here and had lost someone he loves or someone he cares deeply about, he would certainly be working to also have fuel to continue.”

Before arriving in São Paulo, with its premiere scheduled for this Thursday (5), the musical passed through Rio de Janeiro and at the end of the season, Tiago Abravanel had to leave after the death of his grandfather.

“We inform that, due to the death of presenter Silvio Santos, in the sessions of August 17th and 18th of the musical ‘Hairspray’, the role of Edna Turnblad will be played by actor Bernardo Berro, replacing Tiago Abravanel, who is an actor, producer and director of the play”, said the statement at the time.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, “Hairspray” tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, an optimistic teenager who dreams of dancing on local TV show The Corny Collins Show. Tracy challenges social prejudices and beauty standards, fighting for equality and racial integration, while pursuing her own dreams. The musical is celebrated for its vibrant numbers and message of acceptance and diversity.

“Hairspray” became popular on Broadway in 2002. Its story is inspired by an American film of the same name released in 1988. Furthermore, the production had a remake starring John Travolta in 2007.

In São Paulo, the play opens on September 5th at Teatro Renault and runs until October 13th. Tickets are still available on the Tickets For Fun (T4F) website.
