Three people died this Thursday (9) after an accident 900 meters deep in a potash mine in the city of Suria, in northeastern Spain.
According to Catalonia police and firefighters, the three workers were trapped after an underground cave-in. The collapse happened at 8:53 am local time.
“We deeply regret the death of the three miners in the Súria mine accident. I want to express my condolences to family, friends and colleagues. The Government of Catalonia is at your disposal and the entire city of Súria,” wrote the President of Catalonia, Pere Aragonès i Garcia, on Twitter.
Firefighters went to the scene with nine vehicles and a medical helicopter. There is no information about the recovery of the victims’ bodies.
The potash mine is located in Catalonia, 80 kilometers north of Barcelona. Potassium is used in agriculture as a fertilizer and as a raw material in industries such as pharmaceuticals, explosives, glass and chemistry.
Iberpotash, the company that operates the mine, which belongs to the ICL Group, did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.
