Broken hugs, unspoken phrases and looks overflowing with dull, numb pain. The new images of Three floors, Nanni Moretti’s film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and arriving at the cinema on 23 September, give us back an intimate world governed by a very thin thread, a humanity that risks breaking at any moment, bringing the subjects to the implosion or, worse, madness. The film, produced by Sacher Film and Fandango with Rai Cinema and Le Pacte and distributed in Italy by 01 Distribution, is taken from the book of the same name by Eshkol Nevo published by Neri Pozza, developed from a screenplay signed together with Federica Pontremoli and Valia Santella.
Unlike the original story, set in Tel Aviv, the Three floors morettiano chooses to move the heart of the action to Roma, focusing attention on the three floors of an apartment building and on three well-defined families. A young couple lives on the first floor – he is Riccardo Scamarcio – , with two little girls who, sometimes, they entrust to the elderly people across the street. One day the neighbor, who has already shown signs of Alzheimer’s, disappears with the eldest for a few hours until they are found alone in an orchard: the shadow of doubt and possible abuse appears in the father in a pounding way , putting in crisis not only the relationship with his wife, but also the certainties he thought he had.
A couple lives on the second floor – Alba Rohrwacher and Adriano Giannini – who cannot fully live family life. He is always on the go, and she feels neglected, feeling a deep sense of guilt at the thought of wanting to do everything but stay confined at home to take care of her two children. One day, however, the brother-in-law with whom her husband has broken up for years shows up at her door, asking her to host him because he is wanted by the police, a circumstance that will lead the woman to live a new reality and adopt a new perspective. Finally, a retired judge lives on the top floor (Nanni Moretti) and his wife (Margherita Buy) left a widow, forced to reconnect with her son, of whom she has no news since she had a furious quarrel with her husband. Three floors, which returns the stories of a bourgeoisie that is intertwined with society and politics, sees a very rich cast that also counts Elena Lietti, Denise Tantucci, Alessandro Sperduti, Anna Bonaiuto, Paolo Graziosi, Tommaso Ragno, Stefano Dionisi and Gea Dell’Orto, increasing the expectations of an audience that has been waiting to see it for over three years.
