Through social networks, the former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid his respects to Queen Elizabeth II, after the confirmation of the monarch’s death, on Thursday afternoon (8).
“She looked so timeless and so wonderful that I fear we would have believed, as children, that she would go on and on,” Johnson said.
“Wave after wave of grief is rolling across the world, from Balmoral — where our thoughts are with the entire royal family — and reaching far beyond this country and across the great community of nations that she so cherished and that cherished her in return.”
The former prime minister also stressed the importance of Elizabeth’s reign in the nation’s history. “When we think about the void it leaves, we understand the vital role it played, in a selfless and calm way, incarnating the continuity and unity of our country. We think of your deep wisdom, and historical understanding, and your seemingly inexhaustible but underrated sense of duty.”
“God save the king”, says new prime minister
UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and has welcomed the start of the reign of her successor, Charles III.
Referring to Elizabeth II’s reign as the “second Victorian era”, Truss stated that “we will enter a new era of our country’s magnificent history just as the Queen would have liked, saying the words ‘God save the King'”.
Truss, who officially took office on Tuesday (6) after meeting with the monarch, highlighted that “we are all devastated by the news we heard from Balmoral. The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a great shock to the nation and the world.”
