Passengers on buses robbed this Wednesday morning (9) on Avenida Brasil, one of the main roads in Rio de Janeiro, reported that the bandits were aggressive towards those who refused to hand over their belongings. One of them told CNN that the criminals even tried to molest a woman.
“We already know that this bus is robbed almost every day. I am scared! This bus is closed, you can’t see it from the outside. I heard knocking on the driver’s door and they came in saying it was a robbery. I took out my cell phone, put it on the floor, picked up my phone and put it in my pocket, and put my wallet under the armchair. I calmed down the lady who was very nervous because the guys were very violent. They started hitting, throwing others to the ground and stepping on them, it was very violent. The gentleman who was next to us had two cell phones. He gave the old one and the criminal broke it in the man’s face, wanting the other cell phone. Then they went back there to do savagery. They even tried to molest a woman inside the bus. The woman threw the phone into her breast and the guys started searching her, touching her chest,” said one of the victims.
The suspects were identified as Kauan do Nascimento Monteiro, aged 19, and Brendon Tavares de Oliveira, aged 25. A third suspect who was outside the collectives providing support managed to escape. Brendon, who is from Vila Kennedy, a community in the West Zone of Rio, has at least 16 police records. Kauan, who is from Complexo do Alemão, in the North Zone, has four passages.
The criminals captured two buses from the Tinguá transport company, line 490, which runs between Miguel Couto, in Nova Iguaçu, Baixada Fluminense, and Central do Brasil. The crime occurred around 6:30 am, when the vehicles were on Avenida Brasil, near Irajá, in the North Zone.
The bandits entered the first bus and robbed several passengers. Then they went to the second vehicle and continued robbing. In total, they managed to take 55 cell phones, as well as other belongings. They were still planning to rob a third collective, but were intercepted by police officers from the Battalion of Policing in Vias Expressas (BPVE) who were based on Avenida Brasil.
The driver of the first bus slowed the bus and managed to alert the agents, who began a chase. There was an exchange of gunfire and the suspects were shot. They were taken into custody at the Getúlio Vargas state hospital, in Penha, also in the North Zone. According to the State Department of Health, they are in stable health.
A revolver was seized and all stolen property was recovered by the Military Police. The incident was registered at the Penha police station, which is investigating the case. The place received dozens of passengers who came to give statements throughout the day.
In a statement, the transport company Tinguá regretted the episode of violence and said that it provided a vehicle to transport passengers so that they could give statements at the police station.
