They are fully feasible, says a USP professor on Brazil’s environmental goals

Professor at the Institute of Energy and Environment of the University of São Paulo (USP) Pedro Côrtes said in an interview with CNN this Monday (1st), that Brazil’s environmental goals — released by the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, at COP26 — are “fully feasible”.

One of the goals is a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In addition, the head of ministry stated that the country intends to neutralize carbon emissions by 2050.

“These are fully feasible goals, but we really need a political will, an effective demonstration that this is possible,” said Côrtes.

In his speech, however, the minister made the achievement of the goals conditional on the inflow of resources. “Funding is urgent so that the world can face the challenges presented”, said Leite.

However, for Cortes, this financing should not happen. “It is certain that this resource will not come, due to all the recent past”, said the professor.

Some of the reasons exemplified by the professor about this past are the lack of combating deforestation, the dismantling of the Ministry of the Environment and the bureaucracy of environmental assessments in Brazil.
