US President Joe Biden plans to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in the coming days, at a time when tensions are simmering in relations between the two countries.
“I think I will be talking to President Xi within the next ten days,” Biden told reporters as he returned from a climate-related visit to Massachusetts.
The reported phone call has been planned for a long time and will come at a critical time given the tension over Taiwan’s status as the Biden administration considers a drastic reduction in tariffs on goods imported from China in order to to help reduce inflationary pressures on American consumers.
President Biden expressed doubt about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s planned visit to Taiwan next month, saying, “I think the view of the military is that (the visit) is not a good idea for the period we’re going through, but I don’t know what her status is,” the US president remarked.
