In an exclusive interview with CNN this wednesday (8), senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) stated that there is no initiative to change the status of the Central Bank (BC), but that the interest rate review debate is of interest to the government because the “country needs to grow up.”
“There is no initiative to review the status for which the Central Bank was raised and which was approved by the National Congress”, he pointed out.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has been criticizing the Central Bank, the president of the institution, Roberto Campos Neto, and the interest rate. In his statements, Lula questions the independence of the monetary authority, in force since 2021.
The head of state even said that the Senate should be vigilant on the matter.
Randolfe pointed out that the issue of interest rates “does not belong only to the market, nor only to the Copom; it is a theme of Brazilian society”.
He added that the BC president “needs to come to the National Congress always”, but noted that he respects both the institution and its president.
“We want to debate and we are going to debate with the Central Bank, because the BC’s autonomy does not mean autonomy in relation to Brazilian society”, he said, adding that there are public objectives in laws that must be achieved.
“President Lula’s government and all of us are interested in debating the interest rate, because the country has to grow. The country has to grow, because it has to create jobs and take people out of hunger”, added the senator.
Fiscal anchor and reforms
Senator Randolfe Rodrigues reinforced the announcement made by the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, that by April there will be a new proposal for a fiscal anchor to be approved.
“Don’t talk to me about fiscal uncertainty in relation to the government”, he pointed out.
As for the tax reform, the senator pondered that it is “necessary and imperative”, and that its approval is a determination of the government.
In addition, he pointed out that, as Haddad said in a meeting with government leaders in which the congressman was present, “tax reform may represent at least 10% of economic growth for us; 10% growth in our GDP, only with its appreciation”.
