Dramas, drama series produced in East and Southeast Asia, are becoming so popular that they are attracting the attention of even the most traditional audiences.
Including the Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL), a cultural institution created in 1897 with the aim of cultivating the national language and literature, which announced “dorama” as a new word in its vocabulary.
On its official Instagram, ABL published the word with its meaning:
Drama: masculine noun. Audiovisual work of fiction in series format, produced in East and Southeast Asia, of different genres and themes, generally with a local cast and in the language of the country of origin.
The post goes on to explain the origin of the word. Dramas were created in Japan in the 1950s and expanded to other Asian countries, acquiring characteristics and cultural marks specific to each territory.
Also remember that to identify the country of origin, specific names are used, such as, for example, the English language foreignisms J-drama for Japanese dramas, K-drama for Koreans, C-drama for Chinese
ABL has the habit of presenting and recognizing words or expressions that have come into common use in the Portuguese language, which may be neologisms, linguistic borrowings or even words, on a weekly basis.
“The creation, use and dissemination of a new word or expression comes from the need we have to name something that is part of our reality or that our intelligence and perception were able to identify with more intensity”, explains ABL.
“Knowing the meaning of new words enriches our vocabulary and immerses us in the intellectual atmosphere in which we live.”
