The US military shot down a remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle loaded with explosives on Friday in Iraqnear a military base where his forces are stationed, a senior defense ministry official told AFP USA.
The attack was recorded the day after the strikes launched by the US against two installations used by the Revolutionary Guardsan elite body of Iran’s military, and “organizations associated with them,” in eastern Syria.
“US forces opened fire on an attack drone a few kilometers from the (Ain) Al Assad base in Iraq and managed to shoot it down” without damage or casualties, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
An organization that calls itself the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” and has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks against bases used by US forces announced earlier that it had sent a UAV to attack the base.
The official also spoke of a rocket attack on Thursday against US forces and those of other nations in the international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, which resulted in no injuries.
The US “precision” strikes launched on Thursday in Syria were “in response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against US (including military) personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed paramilitary groups”, the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
They came after US President Joe Biden warned Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against any attack on US troops.
Armed groups close to Iran have threatened to attack US bases because of Washington’s support for Israel, which declared war on Hamas after the Palestinian Islamist movement’s unprecedented attack on Israeli territory on October 7.
The US keeps about 900 troops deployed in Syria and another nearly 2,500 in Iraq as part of operations against IS.
