Reinforcements for the border patrols of the United States can be robotic dogs. This week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released details of four-legged robot testing at the US southern border. They are used for various purposes, but primarily for monitoring order. The four-legged robots are designed and built by Ghost Robotics, which competes with the better-known Boston Dynamics. Its most popular model is the Ghost Vision 60, a 32kg robotic dog that can travel over 12km in 3 hours on a single battery charge. It can move autonomously or be controlled manually, and also carry a payload. The equipment of the robot includes thermal imagers and night vision cameras. In the past, Ghost Robotics has even demonstrated prototype models with weapons, although it is unlikely that DHS is testing just such robots.
DHS has tested robotic dogs for potential border duty. They were tested for “guard service” with patrolling along specified routes, for inspecting train cars at marshalling yards, and for examining residential buildings. In addition, a scenario was worked out that simulates a meeting with hostile people. The main feature of four-legged robots is that, unlike tracked or wheeled vehicles, they can move in any environment accessible to a person, including stairs, stairs, steep hills and rocky terrain.
