One of the rarest trees in the world, the Wollemi pine, is the first time in the garden of a retirement couple in Worcestershire. The couple hopes that this tree will be able to reproduce, thereby helping protecting the endangered species. The Wollemi pine, which has been described as a “dinosaur tree”, is over 90 million years old and is believed to have disappeared with the tyrannosaurus. However, a group of these prehistoric conifers was discovered in 1994 in a remote valley 125 miles west of Sydney in Australia. In 2010, small plants and branches of the Wollemi pine were sold around the world and one of them was planted by Pamela and Alistair Thompson in their wichenford garden.
