The 51-year-old treasurer of the St. Andrews Church in the British city of Shifnali was sentenced to imprisonment for the theft of donations of local parishioners and scout associations for participating in a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme.

The fraud was revealed when representatives of the church and scouts noticed significant financial inconsistencies between the amount of charity donations and a balance of bank accounts.

The County Police of Schrophir said that the financial crime was committed by Desmond Rogers, who held the Treasury position from 2018 to 2023 and controlled the financial activities of church organizations, systematically withdrawing money from their bank accounts. According to the police, the total amount of stolen funds amounted to about $ 170,900 ($ 225,500).

Rogers admitted to the investigation that he himself became a victim of cryptocurrency fraud, believing in the promises of high income from investment in digital currency. The money that he transferred to participate in the cryptocurrency scheme was stolen by scammers.

By the decision of the Royal Court, Rogers was found guilty of theft and fraud. The court sentenced him to imprisonment, but the exact duration of the term in accessible sources was not indicated. Based on the judicial practice of Great Britain, the convict may face up to seven years in prison.
