The strangest Christmas traditions around the world

There are those who make the Christmas tree on the day of the Immaculate Conception and those who love to decorate the house in advance. Those who prefer the Christmas Eve dinner to lunch on the 25th, those who put the Baby Jesus in the crib immediately and those who wait for Christmas morning, those who cover the outside of their home with lights and those who decorate only inside. But even if with some difference between one place and another, many Christmas traditions are recurring. There are others, however, which we may not even know exist, which are typical only of some countries or geographical areas.

In Austria, for example, the tree is decorated on Christmas Eve while the rest of the Christmas period – the advent – is marked by the Christmas wreath which is traditionally prepared at home with pine branches and decorated with ribbons, balls, cinnamon and orange peel and on which 4 candles are then placed, one corresponding to every Sunday before Christmas. Tradition has it that every Sunday morning the family lights the candle and prepares a rich breakfast with homemade biscuits.

To these, however, there are many other Christmas traditions that, besides being specific to a single country, are above all strange… Absurd, some even make you laugh, others seem meaningless. THEn Venezuela, in Caracas people go to mass in the pre-Christmas period with skates, in Norway they hide their brooms … Each culture celebrates differently. There are those who rely on other “characters” than Santa Claus for the delivery of gifts, those who decorate the tree in an unusual way and who even try to discover their destiny by throwing shoes. The most beautiful thing is that each tradition has a story, or one could say a motivation, which is the most interesting part to discover.

In the gallery we have collected 10 strange Christmas customs from all over the world.
