The Stories We Are, Danielle: “Help me take care of my daughter”

Chiara Insidioso was reduced at the end of her life to only 19 years by her former partner, Maurizio Falcioni, sentenced to 16 years in prison. It was February 3, 2014. Today Chiara, a survivor of the femicide, is 26 years old and lives in a structure for people in a vegetative state. But she is conscious and even if she cannot speak with her voice, she understands everything, she communicates with her hands, her eyes, she uses the cell phone and the computer.

At his side, every day for 7 years, there is his mother Danielle Conjarts. He reaches her through Rome, up to Casa Iride, the structure where he has lived since 2014. «Chiara does not deserve to be treated like this. It needs a specialized structure that can help it progress, with an advanced speech therapy path. He must socialize with others while at Casa Iride he can only socialize with the three nurses on duty and the patients’ families. He also attends a day school for disabled people who are already born disabled and there he will never be able to recover ».

To keep in touch with her former world, Chiara uses the telephone. «She made herself understood by gestures. She always pointed to my cell phone and so we started making video calls with friends and that’s one of the things that makes her happiest ».

Thanks to her constant commitment, Danielle was able to obtain, after a wait of nine months, a medical report that she hopes will speed up the transfer of her daughter. “For too many years he has lived there with patients in a terminal vegetative state. I hope they will transfer her as soon as possible to a structure that can finally guarantee her a dignified life. My daughter has already suffered too much, she must not be forgotten ».

Chiara’s story was told by Cristiana Cimmino in the book “Steel flower”. Part of the proceeds will go to the purchase of a new wheelchair for Chiara and a communicator.
