The Srebrenica Massacre and the participation of Greek paramilitaries

After World War II, Europe tried for many years to heal its wounds. This began to happen mainly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. However, with the collapse of “existing Socialism”, skeletons that were well hidden in the closet came to the surface. Or so some people thought. The disintegration into many parts of formerly powerful countries sparked hatred that had been simmering for decades.

The most typical example was and remains the break-up of Yugoslavia. The war that followed showed the magnitude of the hatred. And it was then that Europe relived the horrors of war in its own skin. It was the day that Europeans woke up and first heard the word “Srebrenica».

A city in eastern Bosnia was to become the blood-stained symbol of hatred. A word that even today causes horror and disgust. The 11the July 1995 is the darkest day for Europe since World War II.

Greek paramilitaries also took part in this day, which is reminiscent of Distomo, Kalavrita or Anogia. Members of its criminal organization Golden Dawn or nationalists who believed that by slaughtering civilians they were protecting Europe from Muslim invasion.

The Srebrenica Massacre

“Small Mine”, meaning the word Srebrenica, was declared a “safe haven” during the war in Yugoslavia. This, in essence, meant that it was under the full control of the UN blue helmets and no one could harm the people who had taken refuge there.

The Serbs, however, claimed (then and now) that in Srebrenica, in addition to the civilians, they had found refuge and used the city as a base for armed jihadist groups. Although this claim was never proven, it was enough to be the “key” that will open the gates of hell.

By early July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces had begun besieging Srebrenica. Sporadic low-intensity battles that took place on the outskirts of the city were simply the harbinger of the massacre.

On July 11, Bosnian Serb forces, under General Ratko Mladic and under the political cover of Radovan Karadzic and Slobodan Milosevic, invaded the martyr city and literally leveled it. The approximately 100 Dutch blue helmets that were supposed to be there to protect the civilian population did not do the slightest thing. “They did not drop a single rifle in the air.” Even if they wanted to, they were few.

When Srebrenica fell, Serbs put women and young children on buses and drove them out of town. They held more than 8,000 young men and boys captive. Few, perhaps a few dozen, were the ones who managed to escape. No one can know exactly how many were killed. Until a few years ago, heaps were still recognized and funerals were held.

What is certain, however, is that within the next 10 days of the invasion of Srebrenica by Ratko Mladic’s forces, more than 8,000 people were executed in summary proceedings, most of whom were thrown into mass graves dug into hills around the city.

Golden Dawn members and Greek paramilitaries took part in the Massacre

“When the artillery stopped the bombing, we went in and cleaned up” these words were heard from the Mega frequency and came from the mouth of a Greek who had voluntarily enlisted in the Serbian army.

The newspaper Ethnos, on the other hand, in a report from the region wrote that “four flags were raised on the ruins of the Orthodox Church of Srebrenica: the Serbian, the Greek, the Vergina and the Byzantine”! Until the first days after the Massacre, no one knew the magnitude of the horror and so he found room to develop a latent expression of Greek-Serbian friendship.

As time went on, however, and Europe was faced with a merciless massacre, the mouths opened. The “patriots” who took part in the occupation of Srebrenica were nationalist paramilitaries and members of the Golden Dawn criminal organization, which through its propaganda publications was proud of their participation in the war in Yugoslavia.

It is estimated that about 20 Greeks entered Srebrenica together with Serbian forces. All members of the “Greek Voluntary Guard”. Their goal is to help the “Serbian brothers of General Mladic” in their plan for “nationally clean areas”! THE Ratko Mladic was the one who asked them to raise the Greek flag in the martyrdom of Srebrenica, while Radovan Karadzic awarded them the medal.

Their participation was initially confirmed in the report of the committee of experts appointed by the Dutch government. In particular, these references are contained in the third volume entitled “Intelligence en de oorlog in Bosnia 1992-1995” (“Espionage and War in Bosnia 1992-1995”). The author of the volume, Professor C. Wiebes of the University of Amsterdam, had access to the archives of the Dutch secret services, as well as to the archives of the United Nations.

According to a report by the Dutch Institute for War Documentation (NIOD), Dutch blue helmets saw scum that had replaced the regular Bosnian Serb army in professional uniforms, as well as Rambo-style guys from various paramilitary detachments. They saw, in particular, men of the Drina Wolves and also a soldier from the White Eagles of the Serbian nationalist fascist Vojislav šešelj. “Montenegrin and Greek mercenaries were among the military units deployed throughout the Potokari area.”

At the same time, in 2008 the Dutch journalist Incheborg Bichel shot the documentary “The Greek Way”, which refers to the Greek participation in the Srebrenica Massacre.

In addition, his extensive journalistic research Greek blog XYZ Contagion (from where the amateur photos were taken) revealed by name, now, who and especially what were the members of the “Greek Voluntary Guard” that fought on the side of the Serbs and had not just a regional role but active participation in the Massacre. The blog’s researchers, in fact, have publicly complained that they have received threats to their lives, after the publication of what they discovered.

Crime and punishment

The fall of Srebrenica and the brutal massacre meant the countdown to the Bosnian war – as the civil war was called in its last phase. The humiliation of UN forces has forced the international community to take tough action by bombing Bosnian Serb areas.

The mastermind of the massacre, General Ratko Mladic, and his political boss, Radovan Karadzic, were arrested after years of absconding as the masterminds of the massacre, while their leader, Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, died in prison before being released.

In March 2016, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) sentenced the president of the “Republika Srpska of Bosnia” Radovan Karadzic sentenced to 40 years. He was found guilty of 10 of the 11 charges he faced in connection with war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the Srebrenica genocide.

Three years later, on Wednesday (March 20th), the UN Court of Appeals increased the life sentence of the former Bosnian Serb political leader to life in prison, saying the first-instance sentence was too lenient after Karadzic deliberately carried out the massacre.

In 2017, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) convicted Serbian General Mladic – known as the “butcher of the Balkans” – as guilty of genocide and other war crimes, including murder, kidnapping, torture, torture and torture. .

According to the court ruling, the then Bosnian Serb military commander “played a key role in the Srebrenica massacre. “He was a member of a joint criminal operation aimed at persecuting non-Serbs in Bosnia and exterminating the population of Srebrenica between 1992 and 1995.”

Finally, as far as the Greek far-right parastatals are concerned, they may also face justice as in April 2021 Munira Subasic, who lost her son and husband in the Massacre, head of the organization “Mothers of Srebrenica” spoke to Independet Balkan Agency and stressed that “there is a lot of evidence that they operated in Srebrenica.

There are photos that prove it. The Greek volunteers who took part in the massacre after the fall of Srebrenica in 1995 never came to justice. According to information transmitted by the news agency, in fact, survivors of the Srebrenica genocide intend to immediately file lawsuits against specific individuals.
