The Communist Party of China today unveiled its new leadership team, consisting of seven officials. None of the new members of the Standing Committee seem capable of overshadowing President Xi Jinping.
Its composition follows, in the order defined by the protocol. As a rule, the second or third is also called the prime minister of the country, according to the AFP and the Athens News Agency.
Xi Jinping
In power since 2012, the 69-year-old leader secured a third term as his secretary general KKKpromising his fellow citizens the building of a “modern socialist country”, despite the possible “dangerous storms” that might lie in its path.
His new term at the top of the party apparatus also guarantees him a third term in the presidency, starting in March 2023.
Li Chiang
The 63-year-old head of the party organization in Shanghai is considered a staunch ally of Xi Jinping.
His image was tarnished in the spring, due to the chaotic management of the lockdown in the metropolis to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus pandemic.
But he was expected to “get a promotion” despite this fact, analysts of the SinoInsider institute discounted, describing the situation as “ironic”. In his case, “the talk of favoritism” in the CCP will never stop, Sinologist Bill Bishop commented earlier this week.
Bye Leji
The 65-year-old, a member of Xi Jinping’s inner circle, headed the party’s dreaded disciplinary inspection committee, tasked with handling the wide-ranging anti-corruption operation. He previously headed the CCP’s powerful “organizational directorate,” which decides on executive appointments.
Wang Huning
One of two members of the Standing Committee, along with Ding Suexiang, who never exercised power at the city or county level.
The 67-year-old Francophile is considered to be among the main ideologues of the KKK. He is credited with coining the phrase “Chinese dream”. This is a slogan often used by President Xi.
Originally from Shanghai, Mr. Wang is also said to have ties to former President Jiang Zemin’s (1993-2003) network of people.
Kai Chi
Head of the party organization in Beijing, he worked with the current General Secretary for years.
It was already in his sphere of influence when Mr. Xi ruled the coastal provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang from 1999 to 2007.
The 66-year-old assumed responsibility for security issues in the capital in 2014. He oversaw the Winter Olympics at the beginning of the year.
Ding Suexiang
At 60, Xi Jinping’s discreet private secretary can boast that he is among the Chinese president’s closest associates and advisers. He was already part of his team when Mr. Xi headed the Shanghai party organization in 2007.
As of 2017, he is a member of the Central Committee of the KKK, its internal party “parliament”, with some two hundred members. His face often appears in the background in state media, as he is almost never far from the president.
Li Xi
At 66, he has maintained relations with the party and state leader since the 1980s. At the time, he was secretary to a close ally of Xi Jinping’s father, Mao’s comrade-in-arms.
He heads the party organization in the industrial province of Guangdong (south), which neighbors Hong Kong.
