A second British soldier captured while fighting with the Ukrainian army in Ukraine war, appeared on Russian state television. Shaun Pinner, 48, appears in a propaganda video released Saturday night.
“Hello, I’m Shaun Pinner, I’m a UK citizen. I was captured in Mariupol. “I belong to the 36th Brigade of the First Battalion of Ukrainian Marines,” he said in the video.
“I fought in Mariupol for five to six weeks and now I am in the Donetsk People’s Republic.” In the video, the soldier was wearing a blue hood and had no obvious bruises, but he looked tired.
Pinner – originally from Bedfordshire, England, but living in the Ukrainian city of Donbass – was fighting in the besieged city of Mariupol with his friend Aiden Aslin, 28, the Guardian reported.
“I am afraid for my life, the Russians will treat us differently if we are arrested”
Aslin – was the first known UK prisoner of war – was also filmed for a propaganda video released last week on Russian state television. In the clip, he was asked if he was responsible for any murders. “I do not know,” he replied nervously in English. “I did not take part in any battle.”
The Kremlin has said that 1,026 Marines fighting for Ukraine – including 162 officers – had surrendered “as a result of successful attacks by the Russian armed forces and militia units of the Donetsk People’s Republic.”
Piner had previously expressed fears of his arrest.
“I am afraid for my life. The Russians will treat us differently if we are arrested because we are British. “It is always on my mind that I will be arrested,” he told the Mail on Sunday in January.
But he said he felt obliged to fight for his new homeland.
“I am here to defend my family and my adopted city. Russia started this war. “It is funded by Russia and led by Russia, but we will fight them, make no mistake about it,” he said.
