The journalists, who were preparing a report on “the shelling of areas by the Ukrainian army”, were targeted by a Ukrainian drone in the Zaporizhia region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
“Boris Maksudov died like a hero, like a brave warrior,” said the CEO of the Russian media group Rossia Segodnia (Russia Today) Dmitry Kiselev, as quoted by the public news agency Ria Novosti.
The Zaporizhia region is one of four that Russia has announced it will annex in 2022, along with Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk, although its military does not fully control them.
In July, Moscow announced that a Russian journalist from Ria Novosti had been killed by a Ukrainian strike.
About 15 journalists have been killed since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, according to a count by Non-Governmental Organizations. In May, AFP video coordinator in Ukraine Arman Solden was killed in a Russian missile attack in the eastern part of the country.
Russia, however, denies any responsibility for the deaths of journalists, which are attributed to strikes by its military.
