The Queen’s Illness, the Clashes Between Charles and William, and Everything Princess Kate’s New Biography Reveals

Is titled Catherine, The Princess of Wales the biography of the Princess of Wales which is released on August 1st in the UK. She wrote it Robert Jobson and the Daily Mail is anticipating some steps starting from the last months of Queen Elizabeth II’s life. It has long been known that the sovereign, who died in September 2022, had cancer, although Buckingham Palace has always reported the sovereign’s advanced age as the official cause of death. Now the revelation: In the last months the queen was almost blind. In those days, the relationship with her nephew William, whom she heard from often, would have been fundamental and even closer for her.

Judging by what Jobson, biographer of many members of the royal family and author of scoops on the Windsors, such as the announcement of Charles’s marriage proposal to Camilla in 2006, writes, the queen is said to have suffered from loneliness in recent months. Her husband was no longer there, many of her friends had left and many of the palace staff in London and Windsor had also changed.

Jobson writes that there were still difficulties between Elizabeth and King Charles, but that what brought joy were “William’s visits and frequent telephone calls.” The current Prince of Wales had moved his residence to Windsor, convinced by his wife, and this allowed him to be close to his grandmother. This role of Kate is fundamental and returns throughout the book with evidence to support the influence and role of the princess as a peacemaker also in the relationship between Charles and William. The figure of Diana always returns in the relationship between the two. Charles has always been defined as an absent father, far from his children, but here we also speak of a Diana who was too attached and supported by her children. It reports the Corriere della Sera: «William asked her to stop badmouthing his father in his presence because he didn’t want to take sides for either of them. And he occasionally felt embarrassed by certain behaviors of his mother that seemed out of his control».

Kate Middleton represents here the balance with respect to that childhood made of tears and divisions. She gives security to a husband defined as grumpy. It was she who would have brought about the relaxation of the relationship between William and Camilla. The management of the children is fundamental. “William wants his three children, when they grow up, to remember a childhood of total love”. For Charles, she would be the daughter he never had and in private she calls him grandfather.
