Its prime minister Armenian Nicole Pashinian said today that it has agreed to participate in peace talks to be held in Moscow on May 25 with its president Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the role of mediator, as reported by the news agency Interfax.
“We received a proposal from the Russian side to participate in a tripartite meeting mediated by the Russian president on May 25. We accepted the proposal”, stated Pasinian during a government meeting.
THE Russia managed to reach a truce to end the six-week conflict between the two countries in 2020, but this agreement has not led to peace, tensions remain high and outbreaks of violence are common.
THE Moscow has sent a peacekeeping force to Nagorno Karabakhwhich is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but whose population is mainly Armenian.
The United States and the European Union have also undertaken efforts to encourage the two sides to agree to a lasting deal.
