The Department of Cyber Police of the National Police of Ukraine announced the liquidation of a criminal organization that stole more than 6 million hryvnias from residents of Latvia (about $ 144.8 million) through fake crypto platforms.

Since 2022, attackers have created fraudulent brokerage platforms and exchanges that imitated legal sites of crypto investments. Fraudsters opened a network of call centers throughout Ukraine, aggressively promoting their fake investment services by phone and social networks. They used the methods of social engineering, promising the victims of high profit from investments, the police said.

The scammers urged investors to install special software, after which they received control over user devices and access to confidential financial information. To wash the illegally received funds, criminals were registered as individual entrepreneurs and declared their income as a fee for the provision of IT services.

Investigators monitored the movement of digital assets from the addresses of victims to the end recipients. With the assistance of the Patrol Police Department, law enforcement officers conducted more than 30 raids in several regions of Ukraine. The police seized computer equipment, servers, cryptocurns, mobile phones, manuscript records, bank cards, flash drives and cars purchased for stolen funds. The seized assets were frozen by court decision. The organizer of the criminal group and three accomplices were charged with criminal charges, law enforcement officers announced.

In early April, the Ukrainian authorities proposed to introduce a tax of 23%on income from cryptocurrency transactions, which includes income tax (18%) and a military fee (5%). Earlier, Ukraine promised to regulate cryptocurrencies according to the rules of the group for the development of financial measures to combat money laundering (Fatf).
