The occupation of intensive care beds for adults, facing Covid-19, has increased in the country, according to a Technical Note from the Covid-19 Observatory, from Fiocruz, released this Thursday (3).
In all, 13 states showed growth in the rate by the Unified Health System (SUS), in the week between January 24 and 31. Nine states are in the critical alert zone, with indicators above 80%.
The study does not take into account numbers from São Paulo and Espírito Santo, which were not disclosed. The researchers warn of what they call the internalization of the Ômicron variant in the country. That is, when the disease migrates from large centers to less populated cities.
“The behavior of occupancy rates in states and capitals seems to point to the internalization of Covid-19 cases by the Ômicron variant. Some capitals already show more stability or even a drop in their rates, while state rates grow significantly”, says part of the text.

Among the 25 capitals that released the numbers of occupied beds, 13 are in a critical alert zone. Another nine are in an intermediate situation and only eight are outside the two most dangerous scenarios.
“Some capitals already show more stability or even a drop in their rates, while the rates of the states grow significantly”, highlights an excerpt from the document.
Despite the rise in indicators, Fiocruz explains that the scenario is not the same as between March and June 2021. According to the foundation, this was the most critical period of the pandemic.
“In fact, even with the addition of beds observed in recent weeks, the availability of beds is still much lower”, says the document.
Although it is a less worrying situation, the observatory draws attention to the increase. “The growth in the occupancy rates of Covid-19 ICU beds for adults in the SUS is worrying, especially in view of the low vaccination coverage in several areas of the country, where care resources are more precarious”, justify the researchers.
Scholars recall that a considerable portion of the population has not yet received the booster dose against the coronavirus.
They explain that the unvaccinated are the most susceptible to the most serious forms of infection, with Ômicron, even with a lower probability of developing serious conditions.
