A 29-year-old pilgrim died after being run over by a truck in the city of Pindamonhangaba (SP), at km 90 of the Presidente Dutra Highway, towards Rio de Janeiro (RJ), this Saturday morning (12).
The collision happened around 2:30 am, according to the Federal Highway Police (PRF). The victim, who was a cyclist, was taken to the Pindamonhangaba emergency room, while the truck driver waited for PRF agents to perform a breathalyzer test, which came back negative.
With the death recorded this morning, the number of pilgrims who lost their lives during the pilgrimage to the National Sanctuary of Aparecida, this week, reached four.
Other deaths
A group of pilgrims, with seven people, was hit by a bus on Via Dutra, in Santa Isabel, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, last Tuesday night (8). The accident left a 51-year-old man dead and two people with minor injuries.
Another pilgrim, aged 65, was hit by a car, also in the city of Pindamonhangaba (SP), at km 99 of Via Dutra, on the road towards Rio de Janeiro (RJ), on Tuesday night (8). The vehicle that hit him has not been identified.
The third case registered until this Saturday was that of a 76-year-old pilgrim, who died after being run over by a tourist bus, near Jacareí, in the early hours of last Friday (11). He was riding a bicycle on the shoulder of the road when he lost his balance and fell, according to the Public Security Secretariat.
