The new life of Christian of Denmark, just “promoted” to first heir to the Danish throne

With the abdication of the eighty-three-year-old queen Margaret II of Denmark in favor of the son Frederick, Christian of Denmark was “promoted” to first heir to the Danish throne. Prince, firstborn of the new king Frederick (who will officially ascend the throne on January 14) and his wife Mary of Denmarklast October has turned 18 years old and after that important milestone – celebrated with a grand party organized by grandmother Margherita – another crucial day had arrived for him: in November the prince had in fact participated in his first State Counciland sworn to the Constitutionin Christiansborg Castle in Copenhagen.

A historic day that had officially established its role as heir to the throne: from that moment, in fact, Christian could officially be appointed regent in the event that both his grandmother and his father, for any reason, found themselves unable to fill the role. Now that Margaret has abdicated in favor of her eldest son Frederick, Christian's figure for the Danish monarchy has become even more crucial. So much so that next January 14th he'll be thereas he reveals Hola, at the ceremony with which her grandmother will officially say goodbye to the throne in Christiansborg Castle.

Apart from a few official events, until now Christian had led a life away from the spotlight and as “normal” as possible, made up of study (he is completing his higher than the Ordrup Gymnasium) and love: just last August the prince had presented at court his fiancée Maria Chiara of Bourbon Two Sicilies. Christian was in no hurry to get too involved in the affairs of the Palace, so much so that by the time he turned eighteen he had renounced the royal prerogative, a right to which representational duties are linked. It is in fact a salary, commensurate with the age and degree of presence required of the prince/princess, which forces those who receive it to work for the royal family, attending public events and lending one's image for the use and consumption of photographers. Christian had therefore chosen not to be paid because he wanted to live his years with greater carefree and freedom.

However the prince, unlike the three brothers (Princess Isabel and twins Vincent and Josephine), is growing up with a crown in his destiny. He knows it well, and grandmother Margherita he reminded him of this on his eighteenth birthday: «Dear Christian, today you become an adult, as happens to all other young Danes. But there's a difference. Your path in life is already marked, because one day you will follow your father's destiny, just as one day he will follow mine. You will become a link in the long historical chain that has united our country for centuries.” With his grandmother's abdication, that destiny under the sign of the Crown is closer for Christian. Honors and charges included.
