The liberals ensure a fourth mandate; Carney becomes Prime Minister – Danske Bank

This morning, the Liberal Party of Canada assured a fourth consecutive mandate, with Carney chosen prime minister, as expected widely, FX analysts of Danske Bank report.

Carney’s experience and his Trump position increase his appeal

“At the time of writing this, the liberal candidates have been chosen in 150 of 343 seats. However, it is still too early to determine if the liberals will form a majority government, being the threshold for a majority of 172 seats.”

“The triumph of Carney is largely due to his experience as responsible for politics, which reassures voters about their ability to guide Canada through a changing global panorama, and the perception that it is the most appropriate to confront Trump, in contrast to his conservative counterpart, Pailievre.”

“The market reaction has been quite contained, since this result was largely discounted, with uncertainty about tariffs and the global investment environment acting as the main drivers of the crossing currently. In the short term, we hope that the USD/CAD goes down to 1.37, given the short positioning stretched of the CAD.”
