THE Premiere of the second season of “The Last of Us” From HBO aired on Sunday (13) and, to be honest, we have more questions than answers.
The first season ended with Joel and Ellie approaching the refuge of survivors Jackson after a distressing country trip that culminated in the end of action at the hospital, where Ellie was ready to sacrifice himself to vagalons to find a cure for the outbreak. Joel eventually saved Ellie, killing anyone who was in his way and lying to her about what happened in the hospital.
A five -year timeline in the first episode restarts the story: Joel and Ellie now have a life in Jackson. Joel is a community leader working alongside his sister -in -law Maria (Rutina Wesley) and started doing therapy. Ellie is a complete teenager who is an enthusiastic patrolling and lives in Joel’s garage. She also still keeps her immunity secret. The dynamic between Joel and Ellie is different and her relationship seems more distant than ever.
The debut episode took us even further, with the introduction of new threats and a series of new characters, which resulted in a season opening that left us with some big questions described below.
Who is Eugene?
During Joel and Gale’s therapy session (Catherine O ”Hara), Gale used a non-traditional method to encourage him to open up on why he thinks Ellie could be angry with him. She told Joel that“ you can’t cure something unless it is brave enough to say aloud ”, and confronted him for killing her husband Eugene in an attempt to cure her own. He had no choice but to kill Eugene, but did not explain why, although we assumed it was because he had been infected.
We know that Gale is an original character from the TV series and not presented on the video game, but Eugene is a character from the “The Last of Us Part II” video game. In the game, he is a former member of the fireflies who had a wife named Claire before he died of a stroke. Actor Joe Pantoliano was cast to appear as Eugene this season, perhaps through flashbacks, but little more is known about how producers will incorporate this character into the series.
Why is Ellie angry with Joel?
The crucial point of this episode focused on the distance between Joel and Ellie. Ellie is a 19 -year -old distressed teenager, frustrated with Joel’s overprotection, but there must be something more at stake because the distance between the two was colder than the streets of Jackson.
Does Ellie already know the truth about what happened at the end of last season at the hospital or she just suspected that Joel was not being honest with her and is saving resentment because of it? Will this reach a critical point later? All signs point out yes.
Is the post-apocalyptic world still homophobic?
As if the world of “The Last of Us” was no longer enough, the season’s debut proved that there are not only monsters outside Jackson gates.
It all happened during a New Year celebration when Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) shared a kiss in the middle of the dance floor-in front of all the guests and Dina’s ex-boyfriend, Jesse (Young Mazino).
Seth (Robert John Burke), owner of a local bar, interrupted the magical moment of Ellie and Dina, saying they were in a “family event.” After he called them with a homophobic insult, Joel pushed Seth to the ground in defense of Ellie, which seemed to upset her even more. It was a complete scene and it was horrible. As Ellie and Dina’s relationship develops, will this residents reaction become a theme? We hope not.
Before you ask, yes, spectators of “Gossip Girl”, Seth is played by the same actor who played Bart Bass. Typical of Bart Bass be horrible.
Why does Abby want to kill Joel?
Abby (Kaitlyn DeM) and his team start the episode in a firefly cemetery near the hospital from which Joel and Ellie escaped. She is distressed and mourned, and seemed to have information that Joel killed a loved one of her. (It was not specified who.)
“Slowly,” she said, referring to how she wanted to kill Joel. “We kill him slowly.”
One of the men in his group suggested that they go to a group in Seattle, where a man named Isaac (Jeffrey Wright) could welcome them and help them find clues about Joel’s whereabouts.
After a five -year time jump, Abby seems to have finally found Joel in Jackson. With a terrifying look of conviction on his face, the episode ends with Abby slowly approaching Jackson’s walls.
What happened to the fungi in the pipes?
At the end of the episode, there is a dramatic close -up of a broken barrel on the streets of Jackson, of which living cordyceps spirals emerge. It’s sinister and scary, serving as an excellent hook for what’s to come. This may also be what the creator and executive producer Neil Druckmann was suggesting when he previously caused the threat that Jackson would face.
In an interview with CNN In March, Druckmann said spectators could see what an entire (zombie) horde would be like to penetrate Jackson’s walls and get in ”and that the audience will see” what is at stake in this world for this community. “
It looks like it will be an event full of action when it happens, especially considering what Ellie observed when she and Dina found an infected girl in their debut. She told Mary and the city council at some point that they were much smarter than the bloodless zombie thirsty for blood.
Hold on your chairs, guys.
