The King, facing a “difficult” 2020, asks not to “fall into pessimism”, “join forces” and give “more hope”

The King Felipe VI has asked this Monday “not to fall into pessimism” in the face of 2020 that is being “a difficult year” for the “immense historical challenge” of the virus for Spain, the EU and the rest of the countries. He has also pointed out that institutions, companies and families demonstrate their “ability and willingness to join forces” and find solutions for the short, medium and long term. Likewise, they must resolve the “more urgent” challenges that already existed before the pandemic and be able to give “more hope” and “optimism” to overcome the crisis.

“Nobody doubts that 2020 is being a difficult year, but we cannot fall into pessimism. Undoubtedly, this virus represents an immense historical challenge for Spain, as for the EU and all countries, in its internal role and in the face of the post Covid-19 world panorama “, stated the King during the inauguration of the XXIII National Congress of Family Business, one day after the declaration of the new state of alarm in Spain as a result of the Covid-19 crisis and outbreaks.

The monarch believes that the challenge is not only to recover from the impact of the crisis and the damage it is causing, but also face the challenges that already existed and that “they are still there and perhaps they have only gotten bigger or made even more urgent”, as they are, as he has quoted, environmental sustainability and climate risk, greater social cohesion and equity, the digital technological revolution or governance and economic, political and institutional cooperation in major global affairs.

In moments like the present, he has remarked, the institutions, companies and families “they have to demonstrate their ability and willingness to join forces and find solutions that seek to serve both the short, medium and long term. “

In this sense, Felipe VI stressed that there is “a lot of talent and intelligence” and that “never before” has so much connected knowledge been accessed, nor has the world seen so much productive and economic capacity.

A “FUNDAMENTAL PILLAR” IN RECOVERY

During his speech at the Congress, whose annual meeting has been held in Madrid in a mixed format (face-to-face and online), instead of in Pamplona as planned, the King highlighted his “commitment” to the family businesses, a “fundamental pillar” of society and “a factor that in these circumstances can contribute to lead the necessary economic recovery and to give that hope “.

The monarch has valued the slogan of the Congress, ‘The force of recovery’, as family businesses are “a true representation and even a spearhead of the country’s social energy”, on which he has highlighted his “way of working “and his way of managing companies” from firm, timeless values, freedom, responsibility and humanism. “

“You focus on the permanent improvement of your activity and on the continuity of business, thinking in terms of generations, far beyond the conjunctural situations. And with these principles, you know how to look after the interests of your workers, clients, and suppliers. Always close, always attentive. Because, day by day, you show that you care about what happens in your cities, in your autonomous communities, in your country “, the king appreciated.

For this reason, he believes that “without a doubt” the experience of family businesses in facing and overcoming previous crises makes them “stronger in contexts like the current one”. “Where there is a family business there is a company with a vision for the future, with the commitment to work and to promote projects that result in the prosperity of all “, he added.

It has also valued its ability to mobilize resources and aid in those most necessary places and times, and after thanking them last year for their work during the floods in Murcia, this year he thanked them for the “immense effort, courage and determination that you have shown in the most important moments. It’s difficult from confinement. “

“Your proximity and your commitment to citizens are undeniable, and this means that you are perceived as particularly close organizations,” he added, insisting on the importance of the “values” of this type of company.

The monarch has also referred to his contribution to sustainability by being “protagonists of a necessary change in the way of organizing, taking advantage of resources, caring for the environment and thinking about the next generations”, a task that ” has been penetrating society and today lhe sustainability is a truly global priority objective“.

Along the same lines, he alluded to the digitization process, pointing out that “education and training of people are increasingly the foundation on which to base many advances, improve the ability to adapt to new circumstances and facilitate the incorporation into the labor market of a large number of citizens “.

After expressing this gratitude, he has asked the family businesses to continue with their work and commitment in the face of the current “so complicated” moments.

“Family businesses are at the forefront of the transformation of our country and we need to continue counting now and always on your effort, drive and responsibility to build an increasingly prosperous and dynamic country”, he stated, wishing that are capable of inspiring new projects that “allow us to quickly recover the place that corresponds to our economy and our society” and that “realism, necessary in any crisis management, does not close the door to optimism to face it with good spirit and without losing confidence in being able to overcome it. “

THE IEF REQUESTS A NEW ECONOMIC COURSE

For its part, the president of the Family Business Institute, Marc Puig, has previously thanked the King for his “constant support” and his presence as he is “more special due to the circumstances”, and has highlighted the role that the Crown plays since “it shows the institutional stability that a country needs to grow and overcome critical situations like the waves we live in. “

That “fundamental” role, he said, was assumed by the Monarchy as a “key” institution that made the transition “from dictatorship to democracy without bloodshed possible”, something for which he believes that all Spaniards have to be “grateful”, both those who lived it and the new generations.

Puig, who has said he hopes that the 2021 congress can be held in Pamplona, has indicated that the “record” of almost a thousand registered for the appointment, and paraphrasing the King, he pointed out that in order to get out of the crisis, a new economic course must be set that has inclusion as its axis.

In addition, he has emphasized that “not everything boils down to profit only “, but companies” must create economic prosperity and social value“, a” characteristic of the family business “, whose time horizon is generations, promoting training.

“Family businesses are essential to carry out the process of relaunching, recovery and transformation due to their values and especially due to the proven leadership capacity”, he added.
