“The killer arrived in a car, was pointing at us and swearing at us” – Testimonies from the new massacre in Texas

Eight people died and 10 others were injured Sunday in Texas when a driver ran a red light and drove his car into a group of people who were waiting for the bus, in front of a reception center for immigrants.

Brownsville city officials said they could not determine whether it was an accident or an intentional act at this time, but an eyewitness told AFP that the driverwho has been arrested and is being treated in an injured hospital, had “cursed” people at the bus stop before speeding off.

“The car ran a red light and ran into several people” at about 8:30 a.m. (Sunday morning local time) in Brownsville, a city on the Texas border with Mexico, said local police spokesman Martin Sandoval.

“Seven people were killed and around 10 were injured,” he added. “We don’t know if all the dead are immigrants. We are investigating it in cooperation with the border guard,” he noted. American media reported a little later that one of the wounded, who has been taken to the local hospital, succumbed.

One of the migrants at the scene told AFP that everything happened “within a few seconds”. “Everything happened suddenly. A woman drove by and told us to pull over and we pulled over. It was a matter of seconds. The killer arrived in his car, pointing at us and swearing at us,” said Luis Herrera, a 36-year-old Venezuelan resident who was wounded in the hand.

As he added, the driver developed speed while approaching the migrants. Bystanders then prevented him from leaving until the police arrived. The driver was arrested for “dangerous driving,” but “it is more than likely that he will be charged with other charges later,” Sandoval noted, without elaborating.

“Scene of Horror”

The victims were among a group of about 25 people who were waiting at a bus stop in front of a homeless reception center, which is currently housing migrants due to the large influx of migrants, said center director Victor Maldonado.

According to him, they were men from Venezuela, who had just had their breakfast in the center. “Suddenly this SUV appeared at a very high speed, went up on the pavement and hit the team” people, he explained.

Maldonado described a scene of horror, with human limbs strewn on the road and eyewitnesses “in a state of shock”. The driver “tried to escape, but the occupants (of the center) caught him and immobilized him,” he added.

They stay at the center, which is open 24 hours a day, during this period citizens of Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, China and Ukraine, but also many VenezuelansMaldonado said.
