The Central Jewish Council describes it as a “terrorist attack”. Germany the attempted arson of a synagogue in Berlin. On the other side, imams and representatives of Muslim organizations express their concern for the peace in Munich.
“It is very clear that we do not and will never tolerate attacks against Jewish institutions,” Chancellor Olaf Solz said from Cairo and announced additional security measures.
“This arson attack is a natural consequence of the glorification of Hamas in the German streets. “Day of Rage” is not just a phrase. It is psychological terrorism that results in specific attacks. Mainly a terrorist attack on our facilities. That is, from words to actions. The radical Islamist organization Hamas’s ideology of destruction against everything Jewish also operates in Germany,” the Council’s statement reads.
For its part, the Israeli embassy in Berlin expressed its belief that the German authorities will deal with the case with “unrelenting severity”.
According to a report by the German public television ARD, two unknown persons threw incendiary devices towards the synagogue last night, who, however, did not reach the building, as the presence of the police prevented the attackers from approaching their target. A few hours later a man riding an electric scooter arrived at the synagogue, threw the bike towards the building and started shouting slogans against Israel. The perpetrator was arrested on the spot.
The night also saw more than 20 incidents of stone and firecracker attacks on police officers patrolling Muslim-majority areas. “Images from last night clearly show that we are experiencing the effects of a religious war on the streets of the capital and emergency services are being targeted by religious fanaticism, which will become even more intense as the military confrontation worsensChief Police Inspector Stefan Ve said.
In Munich, a dozen imams and representatives of Muslim organizations wrote an open letter to Mayor Dieter Reiter expressing their deep concern. “Since the attack of Hamas on Israel, events are progressing day by day”, the letter states. The signatories, led by Penzberg imam Benjamin Idrich, president of the Munich Liberal Forum on Islam, say they are calling on Muslims to be prudent, but would also like more support from the mayor. “Time is running out,” they warn. The authors of the letter also call on their members not to take part in the demonstration planned for Saturday by the Samidoun network.
