The Italian Minister of Culture confused Galileo, Columbus, the Indies and the New World

“Columbus wanted to reach the Indies, based on Galileo’s theories,” the Italian culture minister said. But, the Italian astronomer was born a century after Columbus! The Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, referring to the Italian navigator and cartographer Christopher Columbus, stated that he “wanted to reach the Indies, based on Galileo’s theories”. The Italian press immediately pointed out, however, that this is a historical error, since America, as is known, was discovered by Columbus in 1492, while Galileo was born in 1564. Last April, the Italian Minister of Culture had stated, according during the presentation of the new archaeological walk in Rome, that “when we think of Paris, the Champs Elysees immediately come to mind, and when we think of London, Times Square”.
