The IT market in Greece is booming – Year of digital projects in 2020

Value added 50 billion euros to the Greek economy and 500,000 new jobs can be contributed by the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector by 2024, according to a strategic study prepared by Deloitte on behalf of the Association of Information Technology and Communications (SEPE) ).

In 2021 it is estimated that the value of the sector will reach 6.5 billion euros, while for 2022 the updated study predicts that with the utilization of the funds of the NSRF and the Recovery Fund the value will exceed 7.8 billion euros ( from 6.8 billion euros which was the initial estimate).

Growth will accelerate in 2023 and 2024 with the IT and Communications (ICT) market expected to reach 9.1 billion euros and 10.1 billion euros respectively, as 80% of the funds amount to 4.7 billion. (2.2 billion in grants plus 2.5 billion in loans), will be absorbed by 2024. It is also estimated that 85% of the budget will be absorbed by companies in the sector operating in Greece, Greek and foreign multinationals operating with branches in our country.
Speed is critical

All this presupposes that the planned projects proceed quickly. The CEO of the Information Society (IS), Stavros Asthenidis, promised that within the next year, 90% of the projects of the Recovery Fund will be announced. “Our writing samples so far are good. We must give more weight to the design of the projects because any mistake is multiplied in the maturation and therefore in their execution”, he stated characteristically.

The executives of the sector who were present at the annual conference of SEPE expressed their optimism for the future, but did not hide their concern about the speed with which the digital projects will proceed, but also the difficulties they face in finding the right staff.

“There are projects that are not operationally mature, while there is not enough human resources both from the public and private companies. We will have a big problem to implement these projects”, said the president and CEO of Unisystems, Giannis Loumakis, while calling the companies of the sector “in self-commitment we will not make the well-known war of objections and we will help to accelerate the projects.

The crucial role that human resources will play in the success of the digitization project in the country was also emphasized by the CEO of Intrasoft International, Alexandros Manos. “I see that a huge effort is being made to announce the important projects and we are anxiously waiting for their announcement as soon as possible”, he noted characteristically.

The CEO of Space Hellas, Ioannis Mertzanis, stressed that today IT companies are called to overcome themselves, since they must move simultaneously on three axes. On the one hand, they focus on the implementation of complex projects that are already underway. On the other hand, they are preparing for the storm of new projects, which will be announced in the near future. At the same time, as he said, the companies in the sector are called to focus their attention on the field of innovation, extroversion and the next day.
