Its prime minister India, Narendra Monti, met with Pope Francis, whom he invited to visit his country, a sign of improving relations with the Vatican, after the collapse of negotiations for a pope visit in 2017.
“I had a very warm meeting with him Pope Francis. “I had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with him and invited him to visit India,” Monti wrote on Twitter.
The Indian Prime Minister, whose nationalist Hindu government is often accused of persecuting religious minorities, was received at the Vatican by an honorary guard of officers of the Holy See.
According to religious sources, discrimination and violence against religious minorities in India have been on the rise since Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, came to power in 2014.
Today was the first meeting between the Pope and Narendra Monti.
