Millions of Brazilians receive this Tuesday (30) the first installment of their 13th salary. On December 20th, it’s time for the second installment. According to Dieese (Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies), the payment of the 13th salary can inject around R$ 233 billion into the economy.
The amount represents 2.7% of the country’s GDP and will be paid to workers in the formal market, including domestic workers; to Social Security beneficiaries and retirees and pension beneficiaries of the Union, states and municipalities.
In total, approximately 83 million Brazilians will benefit. The additional income, on average, is R$2,539. But what to do with this long-awaited extra income? The ideal is to pay off debts, but for those who don’t, there is no lack of options, especially with the approach of the end of the year festivities. One of them would be to invest the extra money. But is applying the 13th a good deal?
To debate the topic, Tiago Feitosa, investment specialist and professor at T2 Educação, who advocates more conservative investments, and André Perfeito, chief economist at Necton Investimentos, who points to more risky options.
