The country’s most popular investment, savings, is also the lowest yielding. And this becomes even more evident when the Selic rate is at a high level like it is now, at 13.75%.
Today, the booklet pays around 7% a year, compared to more than 10% net of investments linked to the Selic.
But in addition to the low yield, savings accounts have everything Brazilians like: they are very practical, look like a current account, have no income tax or IOF (Financial Operations Tax) and have very low risk.
No wonder, 23% of Brazilians say they invest in savings. The second most popular investment, funds, are accessed by only 3% of the population, according to the Investor X-Ray by Anbima (Brazilian Association of Financial and Capital Market Entities).
But after all, does it make any sense to invest in savings?
