The Chinese government could use it TikTok to control data of millions of US users, its director said today FBI, Christopher Wray, in a US Senate hearing, noting that this Chinese app is “rife” with security concerns.
Ray stressed before members of the Senate Intelligence Committee at a hearing on global threats to US security that the Chinese government could also use TikTok to control software on millions of devices and guide narratives to divide the Americans on Taiwan or other issues.
“Yes, and I’d like to point out on that last one, in particular, that we weren’t sure we’d see many of the outward signs of that happening, if it did,” the FBI director stressed about concerns that China could feed users with misinformation.
“This is a tool that is ultimately under the control of the Chinese government — and, to me, it’s rife with national security concerns.”he emphasized.
The White House backed legislation filed Tuesday by a dozen senators to give President Joe Biden’s administration new powers to ban TikTok and other foreign-based technologies if they pose national security threats. The approval bolstered efforts by some lawmakers to ban the popular app, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance and is used by more than 100 million Americans.
Other top US intelligence officials, including Director of National Intelligence Avril Haynes, CIA Director William Burns and National Security Agency Director Paul Nakasone, agreed at the hearing that TikTok poses a threat to US national security .
Nakasone on Tuesday expressed concern during his Senate testimony about TikTok’s data collection and potential for facilitating large-scale operations.
