The Dorchester, London’s iconic hotel, undergoes luxury makeover; see result

The ground floor of the hotel The Dorchester , in London’s upscale Mayfair district, has just received a glamorous makeover with two new bars, an updated facade and a revamped lobby. The floor’s new look is part of what the celebrated hotel calls its “most comprehensive transformation in over 30 years.”

The Dorchester’s Promenade Lobby has been renovated with designs by Pierre-Yves Rochon inspired by the British landscape.

Green, pink, and yellow soften a space lined with dark columns with gold leaf accents. The elegant afternoon tea service returns to The Promenade on January 23rd.

At the end of The Promenade, the new Artists’ Bar highlights artists working in Britain in a luxurious space where Liberace’s mirrored piano takes center stage.

Champagne and seafood dominate the offerings here, and six signature cocktails reflect some of the bar’s signature artwork.

Stamp Duty features Doorly’s Barbados rum, Drambuie liqueur, Oloroso sherry, lime and homemade English tea butter syrup. It’s inspired by a silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II by Ann Carrington made with mother-of-pearl buttons. It is reminiscent of the postage stamp with the image of the late monarch.

The Vesper Bar occupies the space that formerly housed The Bar at The Dorchester. From designer Martin Brudnizki, the space aims to evoke the “spirit and elegance of the 1930s, a time when good manners were still important and yet chaos was celebrated,” the hotel said in a press release.

James Bond tie

The Vesper Bar has a gleaming 1930s palladium-leaf ceiling, green and blue velvet furniture and a new outdoor terrace overlooking Hyde Park.

The bar’s name harks back to James Bond’s connections to The Dorchester. Author Ian Fleming, agent creator of

number 007, dined and stayed at the hotel for over two decades, starting in the 1940s and invented the Vesper Martini, as the hotel reported.

Inaugurated in 1931, The Dorchester was the first hotel in the world to be built in reinforced concrete. Celebrities, royalty and world leaders are frequent guests of The Dorchester.

The renovation of the ground floor will be followed by new rooms and suites that should debut from March of this year.
