The mayor of the Ecuadorian capital Quito, Santiago Guarderas, this Wednesday (2) revised the number of people missing after a landslide on Monday night (31), from 12 to six. So far, there are 24 dead.
Ecuador’s worst rains in nearly two decades have overwhelmed a dam near the working-class neighborhoods of La Gasca and La Comuna, throwing mud and stones onto streets and homes. The storm in Quito last Monday was equivalent to 75 liters per square meter.
Guarderas said the number of injured had risen to 52 and that repair work would begin on dozens of affected homes.
“According to protocol, firefighters have to do rescue work for 48 hours and then cleanup efforts can begin,” the mayor said.
Footage obtained by Reuters showed a man struggling to free himself from the muddy waters flowing down a residential street before being swept away.
