The death toll after the explosion of a boat in the Port of Manaus has risen to two, according to the Legal Medical Institute (IML).
On Friday (11), the vessel was moored in the port when there was an explosion in the hold, when workers were washing the boat’s tank, during routine work.
The Amazonas Security Secretariat found that, after an investigation carried out by the Technical-Scientific Police Department, a fuel leak was the cause of the explosion.
In addition to the two deaths, six other people were injured. Three of them were released while the others remain hospitalized in serious condition at Hospital 28 de Agosto.
In a note, the Brazilian Navy said it will launch an investigation to determine the causes and possible perpetrators of the explosion.
“An Inquiry will be initiated by the River Captaincy of the Western Amazon in order to determine the causes, circumstances and possible culprits. As soon as it is concluded, and the legal formalities are fulfilled, the Inquiry will be forwarded to the Maritime Court, which will make the due distribution and assessment, giving the Special Prosecutor’s Office of the Navy a view, so that it adopts the foreseen measures.”
