The European Commission has launched an investigation into social networks Facebook and Instagram on suspicion of failing to comply with their obligations to tackle disinformation in the run-up to June's European elections, amid concerns over possible manipulation of public opinion by Russia. “This Commission has put in place tools to protect European citizens from disinformation and information manipulation by third countries,” said President Ursula von der Leyen. “When there are suspicions of a violation of the rules, we take action. This always happens, but especially during an election period.” This is the fifth official investigation being carried out by the European Commission under the new Digital Services Regulation (DSA), which came into force last year to tackle illegal online content and products.
