The canals of Venice have dried up, the gondolas are not sailing

Scientists are sounding the alarm because of the prolonged drought in Venice, resulting in the drying up of Italy’s largest lake, Lake Garda. Water levels dropped to record lows, making the small island of San Biagio accessible by footpath for the first time.

“I’ve lived here for over 18 years and I’ve never seen the lake dry up so much. I usually come here by boat but this time I could come on foot. It is very bad. Let’s hope it rains,” said a visitor, according to Mega.

The lake loses two centimeters of water per day and the lake temperature was above average for August. It is a dramatic situation for her Lakefor flora and fauna but also for the environment. In the city of the Doges, traditional gondolas are unable to navigate the canals.

At a time when flooding is usually the main concern of residents and authorities, this year Venice is experiencing unusually low tides. Experts do not hide their concern and point out that it will take at least 50 days of rain for the situation to recover to some extent
