The blogger pumped Steam Deck to the limit: 3 TB, improved cooling and shockproof case

Yesterday, July 25, one of the largest tech bloggers in the world, Linus Sebastian, from the LinusTechTips YouTube channel officially released a video dedicated to his unique Steam Deck portable game console. The blogger himself calls this assembly the ultimate one, since in it the enthusiast reworked most of the hardware elements in order to end up with a truly productive gaming solution. To do this, the channel team updated the screen of the portable computer with protective tempered glass, and also implemented a fairly durable protective case (case from DBrand) – in the video, Linus dropped the device from a height of 50-70 cm without any problems.

In addition, the most important upgrade of the Steam Deck from the blogger is an updated cooling system. It is worth recalling that right from the moment of release, many users complained that their console was too noisy even without loads, and some craftsmen even fixed the problem with electrical tape. Linus approached the issue on a larger scale, installing a huge heatsink in the laptop – it sticks out on the back cover and may well act as a finger rest. As a result, temperatures really dropped – under load in the game DOOM Eternal, the Steam Deck computer showed only 59 degrees on the processor and graphics core.

At the same time, the system assessed the situation and did not even activate the second fan, which, of course, led to a decrease in noise. In addition, developers from the team of a well-known blogger have improved the battery (put a larger capacity) and replaced the standard sticks with new electromagnetic ones – they suffer much less from drift and boast a meager dead zone. This is much better than what is used in the original console from Valve. And, most interestingly, the ultimate Steam Deck build has acquired an experimental 2TB SSD – provided by Micron specifically for this purpose.

Thanks to this blogger, he managed to expand the built-in memory of the portable console up to 3 TB, which is definitely enough to store a lot of entertainment content. Such a console would probably cost a potential buyer too much, so it’s not surprising that Valve used much simpler components. But, on the other hand, if you have skills, tools and money, Steam Deck can really be upgraded to an incredible level.
