It has now become almost a permanent fixture, as well as one of those curiosities that we ask ourselves at the end of the year: «How much did the royals spend in 2023? And who was the biggest spender?”.
To literally do the math in the pockets of the royals UFO No More, a site that identifies the brand of all the clothes and accessories worn by royals which since 2017 has drawn up a list precisely to answer this curiosity. For the ranking, made up of 19 royals, the site divides the various garments shown off into 3 categories: pieces that remain «UFO», i.e. clothes for which it was not possible to trace the signature; pieces that have been identified (and priced accurately); and, finally, pieces whose designer is known but, either because they are personalized or because they are specially created garments, it is not possible to trace the price.
Having made the necessary premises, let's now move on to the meat of the matter by immediately saying that 2023 was “cheaper” compared to 2022 (which recorded an expense of almost €2,365,000): the royals spent just over €1,709,000 for their looks with a total of 1,748 the new clothes and accessories shown off at official and unofficial events (slightly less than in 2022 with 1,804). Of these, the site managed to identify 91% and, therefore, they were taken into consideration for the calculations 1,393 pieces with a precise or estimated cost, leaving out those 355 pieces whose value has not been identified.

And now the ranking, starting from the lowest step of the podium occupied by Princess of Wales Kate Middleton which showed off 135 new items in 2023 for a total of €110,859.32. Of all these, 111 articles were taken into consideration and assigned an “average cost” per head €998.73. The bronze medal for His Royal Highness is therefore confirmed but his spending decreases compared to 2022 where his average price was €1,293.51 and the total of €217,310.46.

The total expense (taking into consideration 29 items) is €196,219.33 with an average price for each accessory of €6,766.18. Second for the absolute total but first when it comes to “average price per piece”. Could it be because of her pregnancy that forced her to update her wardrobe?

Dave Benett/Getty ImagesAnd here we are in first place. As the biggest spender she is confirmed, as in 2022, Charlene of Monaco. 155 new items shown off in 2023 and a total, based on 125 pieces, of 371,821.71 euroswith an average price for each item or accessory of €2,974.57. What changes compared to 2022? 50 new additions to her wardrobe but at a lower expense: average cost of €11,377.56 and total of €739,541.52. Among others, His Serene Highness recently turned 46, celebrated in front of a maxi cake and also with new outerwear: a camel midi vest Max Mara in goose down made with a diamond quilted pattern. Who knows if he will also have celebrated this milestone.

Unique NicoleThere Queen Letizia of Spain is in twelfth place in the ranking with an expense of €58,890.64, many new items, 128, but all purchased at a “low” price for a royal's pocket: just over €460. Closing the ranking is the princess Mary of Denmark, with a total of €13,145.07 and, with 10 items out of 21, its average price per piece was €1,314.51. In the end, between surprises and confirmations in the ranking, the data that emerges is one and unequivocal, namely that 2023 was characterized by “savings”.
